Sandwich Generation

Let’s face it. Whether it is taking care of our children, grandchildren, parents, or all of the above, women usually take on the responsibility. To this end many women may be forced to leave their jobs, or go part-time. This means lowering of 401K contributions, lost health, and retirement benefits. Unfortunately, many families seem to be dealing with these issues more and more. There is even a name society has given our generation-the sandwich generation. Smushed between our younger and older family members we are forced to care for both groups. This situation takes a psychological and emotional toll on all family members, especially women.

I Miss My Mom

I’m over 50, but I still miss my mom. She passed away when I was 33 and she was 60. Obviously, a lot has happened over the years; I have a wonderful husband and two great children. My children are adults now themselves and living on their own, but that tug to talk and confide in my mother sometimes springs up. I have no siblings and my dad has also passed and now and then I just feel lonely.

Grandchildren

I can’t wait for grandchildren. Don’t worry, I’m not one of those mothers who pressures their kids to have children. I’m just ready for when it happens. I look forward to babysitting and sleepovers, and vacations. I just don’t think that I want to commit to a long term child care position. Five years ago, I might have had a different outlook, but as I get older, I hate to admit it, I don’t think that I have the stamina it takes to care for a young one on a daily basis.
