Sandwich Generation

Let’s face it. Whether it is taking care of our children, grandchildren, parents, or all of the above, women usually take on the responsibility. To this end many women may be forced to leave their jobs, or go part-time. This means lowering of 401K contributions, lost health, and retirement benefits. Unfortunately, many families seem to be dealing with these issues more and more. There is even a name society has given our generation-the sandwich generation. Smushed between our younger and older family members we are forced to care for both groups. This situation takes a psychological and emotional toll on all family members, especially women.

I Miss My Mom

I’m over 50, but I still miss my mom. She passed away when I was 33 and she was 60. Obviously, a lot has happened over the years; I have a wonderful husband and two great children. My children are adults now themselves and living on their own, but that tug to talk and confide in my mother sometimes springs up. I have no siblings and my dad has also passed and now and then I just feel lonely.

Long or Short Hair

Do women over 40 look good in long hair? I’m over 50 and have shoulder length hair, maybe a little longer, and I think I look good. In fact, my hair is my best feature. I wash and style it everyday; by that I mean I use a blow dryer and sometimes electric rollers. I regularly get it cut professionally and also get it colored when necessary. But I am afraid to stray to far from my usual style. I have worn this style for years. I did get it cut relatively short a few years ago on the advice of my daughter, but I didn’t love it . My hair stylist has suggested different styles and I have gone along, but they are only slight variations of the same. My friends, most over 50, have short hair. and it looks good on them. I have seen older women with long hair that is not very flattering on them, and is not in very good condition, and I feel as though they are just trying to hang on to their youth. I hope that when my hair becomes brittle with age or over styling I will be able to make the right decision and revamp my look even if it means taking off a number of inches.
